What is a floating flooring installation?

It is referred to as a floating floor when pieces click together, mat, and then hover over the subfloor without adhesives or nails. As a result, your new floors become similar to a puzzle where the pieces just fit together.

Can any flooring be installed as a floating floor?

No. It's a common technique for luxury vinyl, laminate, engineered hardwood, or waterproof flooring.

Solid hardwood is installed with the traditional tongue and groove/nail down. A carpet installation is often done with the stretch (or sometimes glue-down) method.

Fast, easy, uncomplicated

This is what makes it so popular with installers. Of course, it depends on the room size but generally, it is done in a day or less.

Should I use an underlayment?

It deadens sound; in fact, some apartment owners insist upon it. It can also act as a vapor barrier, something you may want if installed over concrete.

Be sure the subfloor’s in good condition

This is a conversation to have at the flooring store. While using this technique over any subfloor, they must be clean, dry, and level.

Remember, a floating floor hovers. That means it will rely on a solid subfloor for rigidity.
